Further Leave to Remain
Extending Your Permission to Stay — Do Not Overstay
That quiet panic — the sudden awareness that the permission underpinning your entire life in the UK has an expiry date — is something we see regularly. And every time, the advice is the same: do not wait, and do not try to handle it alone.
Further Leave to Remain is the formal extension of your existing leave to stay in the UK. It sounds straightforward. In practice, it is one of the most consequential applications you will ever make. The wrong category, a missing document, an income figure that falls just short of the threshold, or an application submitted even a day after your visa expires — any of these can unravel everything you have built here.
We handle FLR(M) extensions for spouses and partners, FLR(HRO) applications for those building their case on human rights grounds, and FLR(IR) applications for children and dependants whose leave needs to align with a family member’s. We also work with clients who have been living lawfully in the UK for ten years or more and may qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain through the long residence route — often without realising it.
If your visa is running out — or has already expired — call us today. The longer you leave it, the fewer options you have. We will tell you exactly where you stand and exactly what needs to happen next, in plain language, in the language you are most comfortable speaking.
ACT NOW — DO NOT OVERSTAY
If your visa is expiring soon — contact us immediately. The sooner you contact us, the better your options. Overstaying your visa — even by one day — can result in your application being refused, your leave being curtailed, and serious damage to your future immigration history. We recommend contacting us at least 3 months before your visa expires.
TYPES OF FLR APPLICATION WE HANDLE
FLR(M) — Partner / Spouse Extension
- For nationals already in the UK on a Spouse or Partner Visa who need to extend their leave
- Most common FLR application we handle for South Asian clients
- Financial requirement: minimum £29,000 gross per year (from April 2024)
- Must demonstrate the relationship is genuine and subsisting

FLR(HRO) — Human Rights
- For those who have built a genuine private or family life in the UK

- Can be combined with a fee waiver application if financial hardship is present
- Best interests of any children in the UK will be a primary consideration
FLR(IR) — In Line with Family
- For dependants — typically children — of a person granted leave in another category
- The child’s leave will align with the leave period granted to the main applicant
- Both parents’ immigration status is relevant to the application
- ▸ The child must be under 18 and not leading an independent life
10-Year Long Residence Route
- If you have lived continuously and lawfully in the UK for 10 years you may qualify for ILR
- The 10 years must be continuous — gaps in lawful leave will affect your qualifying period
